Food
The plethora of races and nationalities has contributed to Reunion Island food including the integration of food from India, China, France, Madagascar and the African mainland making the local food, interesting and exotic. Actually, it is difficult to find any dish tasting like it did - instead French and other influences have enhanced and enriched the recipe. Local restaurants will happily mix Chinese, Indian, French and Creole cuisine on the same plate.
Language
French is the official language and very few people speak English. The local language is Creole. The Creole spoken on Réunion Island is a mixture of several languages with words from French, Malagasy and the African languages. It differs from the Creole spoken in other islands of Indian Ocean or in the West Indies.
Literature
A local literature that has existed for the last twenty years celebrates the culture of Reunion. Most writers who use the Creole language emphasize a global identity (that of being réunionnais and neglect the cultural heterogeneity of the population.
Architecture
Réunion is a cultural gem with stunning Creole architecture, blended with French, Indian, African and Chinese influences.

Holidays
The major holidays are the same as those in France (National Day, Bastille Day, Christmas, New Year's Eve), supplemented by local celebrations such as the anniversary of the abolition of slavery on 21 December and the Tamil and Chinese new years.
Economy
The economy has traditionally been based on agriculture, but services now dominate. Sugarcane has been the primary crop for more than a century, and in some years it accounts for 85% of exports. Other exports include seafood, rum, and vanilla. Tourism, especially from Europe, is a significant economic factor.

The economic well-being of Reunion depends heavily on continued financial assistance from France.
