The Serralves Museum of Contemporary Art in Porto, Portugal, has appointed João Ribas as its new director. He replaces Suzanne Cotter, who left the museum last year to become the director of the Musée d’Art Moderne Grand-Duc Jean.
Prior to assuming his previous post as deputy director and chief curator of the Serralves Museum in 2014, he was a curator at the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Boston and the Drawing Center in New York. For the Serralves Museum, Ribas organized retrospectives for Helena Almeida, Michael Krebber, and Gordon Matta-Clark. In addition to his museum work, Ribas also curated the 2017 Ural Industrial Biennial for Contemporary Art, and has written for Artforum, Art in America, and Mousse, among other publications.
